Environmental Assessment Surveying Irrigation Design

The client approached RRID seeking advice on establishing irrigation for the provision of drought proofing areas of their farm, predominantly used for the rearing of stud race horses.

After consultation with the client, we performed a farm survey to determine the dimensions of the areas required for irrigation and also to complete a formal drainage and reuse system to service the entire property.
After several interactions with the client the final design was signed off and RRID was invited to quote for the infrastructure required to implement the design.

In conjunction with local contractors, RRID installed the main line and hydrant hardware, including new pump station and liaison with power core for the implementation of a new 300kVA transformer and infeed lines to service the system.

The system was designed to incorporate supply from both the Goulburn Murray water supply system and a supply from the Campaspe River at the other end of the property.

The system allows for the use of 3 T61 Rainstar Hardhose Irrigators, which are moved around the property and attached to pre-installed hydrants at each location. The client has found this system to be invaluable in maintaining the green pastures they rely on for a successful horse breeding program.

The client was so impressed with the performance of the system and the irrigators that were installed that they have recommended RRID to many of their associates. From this RRID has installed many other similar systems, getting great outcomes for our clients.

Ravensworth Station – Maude

Environmental Assessment Surveying Irrigation Design

Ravensworth is a long-established, large irrigation property that specialises in cotton, feed crops and cattle feedlots.

The part of the property relevant to the project was approximately 2500ha in size and roughly rectangular in shape. It was discovered that a 48.2ha triangle of the property in the north-west corner had been fenced off long ago and was occupied by the neighbouring station. At same time, a 86.6ha portion in the south-east corner was occupied by Ravensworth but owned by the neighbours.

Due to the large size of the boundaries involved, the integrated use of our Trimble R8 GPS surveying equipment with our traditional Total Station theodolites allowed us to complete the task in an accurate and timely manner.

Rich River Irrigation Developments was engaged to sort this situation out. We surveyed the affected sites to determine and peg the correct boundary locations, connecting the survey to an MGA datum and producing two not-in-common-ownership subdivision plans. As an added complication, easements were created over a 500mgl irrigation channel that traversed the site. The channel is jointly operated by Ravensworth and another property (not involved in the subdivisions). The easement documents needed to encompass the water sharing and channel maintenance issues.

Environmental Assessment Surveying Irrigation Design

The client contacted RRID to assess and complete farm planning on a property he had recently purchased. RRID undertook a whole farm survey and completed an assessment of the existing irrigation infrastructure on the property. In conjunction with the client, RRID generated a proposed development plan for the property, which included the installation of a Bauer 720-metre
Centerfeed Linear Move Irrigator, 100-megalitre on-farm storage and associated supply and drainage infrastructure.

RRID then designed and quoted the supply of the Bauer Linear Move Irrigator before constructing and commissioning it. This included testing of all operational parameters and auditing of the sprinkler application to confirm the machine’s ability to deliver as per the design.

The client initially established a summer crop of corn under the machine, which performed in access of expectations. The have since established permanent Lucerne under the irrigator, which is used for both Lucerne hay and grazing for sheep.

Torrumbarry Estate

Environmental Assessment Surveying Irrigation Design

Torrumbarry Estate approached RRID to upgrade an existing river pump on the Victorian side of the Murray River with a new supply pipeline through adjoining landholdings, national park, creeks and a major highway.

RRID assisted with all the approvals in both Victoria and NSW, covering 14 different authorities. RRID worked on the alteration of an existing easement and created a new easement, including all the assessments, statements and applications on behalf of Torrumbarry Estate to deliver a successful outcome for the completed project.
